I was reading Cal Newport’s Deep work last week, and after 10 years of leaving Primary 3, the realization of why I found mathematics difficult at the onset finally dawned on me.
Mathematics in nursery and the first 2 years of primary school was never beyond “count it together,” and “take away that from that.”
Primary 3 began with word problems. A man has 20 mangoes, his wife takes 12, his son added 3...oh, please. It wasn't the usual ‘count it together’ I was used to.
I wasn't very happy. I thought our teacher then was being unfair. She wouldn't give word problems as an example, but also would not stop giving it as class and home assessments.
Now, what I read in DeepWork that brought about the narrative essay is the two core abilities the one needs to thrive in the new economy.
It is:
1. The ability to quickly master hard things.
2. The ability to produce at an elite level in terms of speed and quality.
I can still remember just like yesterday, the day my boss told me that 90% of the cloths she now sews weren't in existence while she was an apprentice. She was getting it right because she had the foundational knowledge, and was always eager to improve.
It's the same for every field out there.
To thrive, you have to develop your learning speed and be committed to continuous learning, unlearning and relearning.
As for the mathematics, complaining didn't help one bit. After repeated caning and admonishments, I knew I had to pay more attention in class and put in the work. Another lesson learned: Time spent complaining might be futile. Have a rethink and put in the work. It would be worth it someday.
If you read to this point, I am so so glad you did.
Thanks for stopping by and staying put.
I've defaulted twice and I am sorry about that. It was due to some occurrences beyond my control. I'm back now though, Alhamdulillah.
I have question for you before you switch to another tab. Please, I want you to reply in the comments section as a form of acknowledgment.
It is, do you like the style where I share my messages in a story format, or you prefer the usual style of going straight to the message by making bulleted points?
Your review would go a long way, so please do let me know in the comments section.
If you know two or more persons who would love to read this, you can share the link with them.
*Sending virtual hugs*🥰
